July 6-10, 2018
Vienna, Austria – Dr. Eva Feldman and Dr. Brian Callaghan attended the 15th International Congress on Neuromuscular Diseases that took place July 6-10. The biennial event was hosted by the Austrian Society of Neurology and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute.
Dr. Feldman, who is a member of the event’s international scientific committee and the international program committee, chaired multiple sessions, while also speaking on various topics. She was a co-chair for the plenary session on neuropathy, scientific session for diabetic neuropathies, and aspects of diabetes workshop. She conducted a teaching course, polyneuropathien – fokus diabetes mellitus, and presented painful neuropathy: a management centered approach.
Dr. Callaghan presented on treatment induced neuropathy in diabetes (TIND) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in patients with diabetes. TIND occurs when patients have diabetes control that is too quick. This can lead to a severe painful neuropathy. CIDP likely occurs more commonly in patients with diabetes than not, but regardless it is treatable; therefore, important to recognize as different from typical diabetic neuropathy.
Additionally, Dr. Callaghan accompanied Dr. Feldman as a co-chair for the aspects of diabetes workshop. He also served as a co-chair for the peripheral nerve surgery & regeneration workshop.
Another topic of interest at the meeting was a diet and exercise intervention trial that showed improvement in autonomic neuropathy by the University of Maryland’s James Russell, who is a former mentee of Dr. Feldman.
